Illinois requires 80% right to pass the permit test and does not publish a fixed number of questions. Our practice test has 35 questions and asks for 28 right. Test format source

These 10 questions come from FirstTry's Illinois bank, written from the Illinois Rules of the Road 2026. Pick your answer, then open "Show the answer". Each answer links to the handbook section it comes from.

10 right-of-way questions

At a T intersection with no signs or signals, which driver must yield?

  1. Whichever driver is turning right
  2. The driver on the through road
  3. The driver on the road that ends
Show the answer

The driver on the road that ends. If your road ends at a T with no signs or signals, you must yield to traffic on the through road before crossing or turning.

Your light turns green, but a pedestrian who started crossing before the light changed is still in the crosswalk. What should you do?

  1. Go, because the green light gives you the right of way
  2. Yield until the pedestrian has crossed
  3. Honk so the pedestrian hurries
Show the answer

Yield until the pedestrian has crossed. A pedestrian who stepped into the crosswalk before the signal changed still has the right of way, so wait. Even on green, you must yield to anyone still in the crosswalk or intersection.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Right of Way > Pedestrian Right of Way (PDF p. 30)

At an all-way stop, every driver must stop. Who goes first?

  1. The driver on the left
  2. The first driver to stop
  3. The fastest car
Show the answer

The first driver to stop. When drivers stop together, the vehicle on the left yields to the one on the right.

From the handbook: Chapter 9: Roadway Signs > Regulatory Signs > All-Way Stop (PDF p. 68)

Two vehicles on different roads reach a four-way stop at the same moment. Which one should go first?

  1. The vehicle on the right
  2. The vehicle on the left
  3. Whichever vehicle is larger
Show the answer

The vehicle on the right. When arrival is simultaneous, the driver on the left yields, so the vehicle on the right proceeds first. Otherwise, the first driver to stop is the first to go.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Right of Way (PDF p. 29)

You entered an intersection on a green light to turn left, and you are still waiting for oncoming traffic when the light turns red. What should you do?

  1. Stay in the intersection until the light turns green again
  2. Yield to oncoming traffic, then complete the turn
  3. Back up out of the intersection
Show the answer

Yield to oncoming traffic, then complete the turn. A driver who entered on green may finish the left turn after the signal changes to red, once oncoming traffic has cleared.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Right of Way (PDF p. 29)

A pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk ahead of you. What must you do?

  1. Sound your horn and continue
  2. Slow down and steer around the pedestrian
  3. Come to a complete stop and yield
Show the answer

Come to a complete stop and yield. Illinois requires a full stop, not just slowing down, when a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Right of Way > Pedestrian Right of Way (PDF p. 30)

An ambulance with its siren and lights on is coming up behind you. What does Illinois law require?

  1. Move over to the right edge of the road at once and let it go by
  2. Speed up to stay ahead of it
  3. Stop right where you are, even in the middle of the lane
Show the answer

Move over to the right edge of the road at once and let it go by. Pull over to the right right away, stopping if needed, so the emergency vehicle can get by. If you are stopped at an intersection with traffic in both directions, stay stopped until it has gone through.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Construction Zones, Emergency Vehicles, Maintenance Vehicles, School Zones and Funeral Processions > Emergency/Maintenance Vehicles (PDF p. 28)

You approach a police car stopped on the shoulder with its lights flashing. What must you do?

  1. Stop in your lane until the officer waves you on
  2. Keep your lane and speed, since it is on the shoulder
  3. Yield, move to a lane away from it if possible, and slow down
Show the answer

Yield, move to a lane away from it if possible, and slow down. For a stopped emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights, yield, shift to a lane farther away when you can, and keep a reduced speed until you are past. If you cannot change lanes, slow down and go by carefully.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Construction Zones, Emergency Vehicles, Maintenance Vehicles, School Zones and Funeral Processions > Emergency/Maintenance Vehicles (PDF p. 28)

You come upon a funeral procession. What should you do?

  1. Drive through a gap between procession vehicles
  2. Join the end of the procession to get through faster
  3. Yield to every vehicle in the procession
Show the answer

Yield to every vehicle in the procession. Every vehicle in a funeral procession gets the right of way. Do not cut between procession vehicles unless an officer directs you, and do not join the line to get through.

From the handbook: Chapter 4: Traffic Laws > Construction Zones, Emergency Vehicles, Maintenance Vehicles, School Zones and Funeral Processions > Funeral Processions (PDF p. 29)

Traffic is backed up on the far side of an intersection, and your light is green. What should you do?

  1. Stop on the crosswalk so you are ready to go
  2. Enter and stop in the intersection until traffic moves
  3. Wait until there is room on the other side before entering
Show the answer

Wait until there is room on the other side before entering. Do not pull into an intersection or a marked crosswalk unless there is room to clear it without blocking other vehicles or pedestrians.
